Creative brilliance in Year 5

Mr Darley set a homework task related to slavery. Look at some of the ideas that the children came up with!

Someone made a cake in the shape of a slave ship; someone decorated a pot; someone made a salt dough model and someone made the most wonderful cross section model. Just look at them!

The cake was eaten and so we kept a photo as a record.

This is a slaves' graveyard.

There are lots of other marvellous examples - someone drew hundreds of little slaves to show how they were crammed in boats.

Reception Class and Nurseries have their own Sporting Event

On Thursday, we welcomed children from Toddbrook, Sunshine and Bridgemont Nurseries to a sporting event as part of our project on building phyiscal strength. Peak Active Sports planned and delivered the event, which was a real success and we hope we can run something like this again in the future.

Year 1 Christening Service celebration

On Wednesday, Year 1 enjoyed an afternoon down at Trinity Church, where they attended the Christening of Polly (the doll). After the service, they all walked back up to school to have a celebratory tea and to cut the Christening cake, which was made by Lesley in the kitchen especially for them. Reverend Margaret was so impressed at the support that the children got from their parents, and it was a really lovely afternoon.

The Bionic Ear Roadshow comes to Taxal and Fernilee.

Today we had a visit from the Bionic Ear Roadshow which is sponsored by Deafness Research. Children were encouraged to act out parts of the ear. Here are Y3 being the hairs in the ear canal!

The children were shown a giant model of the ear and how it works, and also what happens when it doesn't work properly.

The roadshow was very informative and we will be raising some money as a thank-you for the presentation. We are thinking of having an hours sponsored silence across the whole school!

Children were included all through the presentation and enjoyed themselves.

Year 3 Victorian Play

The children in Y3 usually join in with Y4 and 5 for a joint production. We feel that it is much better for the children to have a go at being in a play where they can have a larger part - as the older children usually have the starring roles. We were proved right by the children's performance today to the whole school. Their parents will have a chance to watch the play tonight. The children all learnt their lines at home and knew the songs really well. Congratulations to Mrs Garlick and Mrs Chamberlain for helping the children act and perform so well.

Mrs Lonsdale organised Silly Sports for Comic Relief Day

Despite the terrible weather, we valiantly went ahead with our plans and a lot of fun was had by all. The children were organised into house and wore coloured bibs to show which house they were in. Mr Darley took lots of wonderful photos. It is hard to choose the best ones to show you, but I will pick out some which illustrate the spirit of the occasion.

Y6 looked after the younger members of their house.

A Very Successful Concert - it was great to be a part of it!

Congratulations to the children in the Kinder Choir, who performed beautifully in the concert on Sunday. On top of that, the singing with the choir was really moving and there were quite a lot of tears (of joy) shed! Many thanks to the parents who chaperoned the children, but there was one person who did the most, and that was Ms Butler, who gave up her own Mothers' Day to help other people enjoy theirs!

I know I am biased, but they really sang their song superbly - here they are ready to perform (picture courtesy of Mrs Hughes, thank you!).

Kinder Choir Rehearsal

Yesterday, the children in the Kinder Choir event went up to New Mills Primary School to rehearse with Hayfield, New Mills and Chapel Primary Schools (the majority of the children in Chapel Primary School were dressed as Wally, from the book 'Where's Wally!). We would not have been able to do this if parents hadn't offered to help out with transport - so thank you so much to those who did.

The singing was beautiful and Mrs Ellis was as magnificent as ever! If you would like to hear the performance it is at the Buxton Octagon and starts at 3 p.m. (Performers have a rehearsal in the morning and have to be in their seats by 2.30 p.m.)

World Book Day - Come in and read to your children and others

This is a message to all parents who are available for 15 minutes on Thursday morning 9 - 9.15. Let's start the day off with a story, or reading from a book your child enjoys or one of your old favourites.

Everyone welcome - especially male readers as it gives our boys good role models to follow.

Just arrive at your child's class with a book and you will have a small audience to read to!

Beautiful Church Drawing

Can you guess the age of the little girl, who drew this marvellous picture of a Church. Mrs Plant was so amazed by it that she sent it to me, so I could see it. I thought that you should too. This was drawn by MP (we don't use names on the website!) in Year 1, who is still only 5 years old. What a talent in the making, the detail is incredible. The sticker at the bottom says it all!
