Special Educational Needs
At Taxal and Fernilee Primary School we see children as individuals and recognise that some have special educational needs at some time or another. This may be in an area of learning, a particular physical need, a behavioural or emotional problem or an exceptional ability. The schools’ philosophy is that every child will gain from an inclusive approach. All children can feel comfortable and supported as an inclusive approach recognises that every one of us has a variety of abilities. Our school is mindful off people with disabilities and makes arrangements to ensure accessibility for all.
Teachers plan appropriate differentiated activities, which address the needs of each child whether this is extra support or greater challenge. Through teacher assessments they identify any child who requires additional support. Following assessment and identification of children who require support, the special Educational Needs co-ordinator liaises with teachers and places the child on the SEN register to ensure that specific targets are set and suitable strategies are put into action.
Pupils are closely monitored and may receive additional support in class or in a small group situation. Parents/carers are fully informed at this stage and are requested to work alongside the school in support of their child.
Those children who have talents in certain areas are also catered for as part of our ‘Gifted and Talented’ programme. Children are identified and placed on a Gifted and Talented Register. They are given the opportunity to extend these gifts/talents through a variety of activities during their time in school.
