A message from the PFTA Team

Our Taxal & Fernilee School Parents, Friends & Teachers Association (PFTA)

The Our Taxal & Fernilee School Parents, Friends & Teachers Association (PFTA) plays an important and ongoing role in school life, helping to create positive experiences, lasting memories, and meaningful support for our children, staff, and wider school community.

Our Purpose

Our mission is simple and heartfelt:

to help create magical, memory‑making moments for our children while enriching their learning, wellbeing, and everyday school experience.

We believe a thriving school is built on strong relationships. By bringing parents, carers, friends, teachers, and the wider Whaley Bridge community together, we help create a supportive, inclusive environment where children can flourish.

 Who we are

We are a registered charity run entirely by volunteers — parents, carers, friends, and teachers who care deeply about our school and its children. Like the school itself, we are constantly evolving as families move on and new ones join. That’s why the PFTA is very much an ongoing, never‑finished job.

Our children always need opportunities, resources, and experiences — and the school always needs our support. To keep that momentum going, we rely on fresh faces, renewed enthusiasm, and new ideas from our school community.

What we do

Fundraising is a core part of our role. We organise fun, inclusive events throughout the year, including:

  • Friday tuck shop
  • School discos
  • School fairs
  • Quiz nights
  • Sponsored runs

Every penny raised goes directly back into the school to fund activities, equipment, and experiences that benefit all our children.

Thanks to the incredible support of families and volunteers, we have been able to fund:

New equipment for Forest School and the playground

First Aid training for all children and staff

New books for the school library

Coaches for school trips and sporting events

Annual subscriptions such as Purple Mash and Twinkl (valued at £3,200)

Year 6 leavers’ hoodies and an end‑of‑year celebration

More than fundraising

The PFTA is not just about raising money. We are a group of passionate parents, friends, and teachers who also give their time, skills, and energy to support school life in practical ways.

Our volunteers help with:

  • Supporting and facilitating Forest School sessions (a firm favourite with the children)
  • Reading with children in school
  • Chaperoning class trips Marshalling at school and community events
  • Ground Force days to improve the outdoor spaces our children use every day

You may be surprised how useful your day job — or a hidden talent — could be. Whether you’re organised, creative, practical, great with people, or good behind the scenes, there’s always something you can offer.

How you can help

We know everyone is busy, and we’re all parents juggling limited time. That’s exactly why the PFTA matters so much. The more people who muck in, the less time each individual needs to give — and the more we can achieve together. Every small contribution adds up to something bigger for our children during the precious time we entrust Taxal & Fernilee School to teach, support, and enrich our families.

Get involved

We meet once a month, usually on a Tuesday evening at The Cock Pub in Whaley Bridge, to share ideas, plan events, and keep things moving forward.

New members are always warmly welcomed.

A core PFTA committee ensures the smooth running of activities and charity requirements. A wider group of fantastic volunteers help out when and how they can.

There is no pressure — just opportunities to be involved in ways that suit your life.
